Analysis shows that a metal oxide has the empirical formula M (0.98 this is the subscript) O (1.00 this is the subscript).Calculate the percentage of M 2+ and M 3+ ions in the crystal.

M:O=.99:1
=98:100
total charge on oxygen=2*100=200
let no of M2+=x
then M3+=98-x
total charge=2x+3(98-x)=294-x
x=94
fraction of M2+
